Compass
Academic Program

Math and Science — launching Fall 2026. We'll grow our offerings each year, with community input highly considered.

September 1, 2026 · May 18, 2027

Compass is Innovation Learning Lab's academic program — built for homeschool families who want structured, rigorous coursework. Innovators can join one offering or build a full academic day. Every class is designed to go deep, not just cover ground.

Math 4/5 brings hands-on, game-based energy to 4th and 5th grade learners, with most concepts overlapping across both grades. Middle School Math covers 6th grade content with a meaningful deep dive into financial literacy and math-based projects and games — because math should connect to real life and be fun. Middle School Science explores Physical, Earth, and Life Science in Year 1, with Year 2 offerings coming in 2027–2028. All three classes meet on Tuesdays and are designed to work together as a full academic day, or individually as a focused add-on.

Compass is built for the whole family — if you choose: Parents have a quiet space on campus to work, rest, or connect while their learner is in class. Siblings are welcome to stay and play on our 10-acre campus under supervision. And for Innovators who are ready to manage their time independently, drop-off is always an option.

Certified Teacher · COMPASS Math & Science Guide

Hi, I'm Deidre! I teach all three COMPASS classes — Math 4/5, Math 6/7, and Science — and I designed each one around a simple belief: learners retain more when they're engaged, moving, and connecting what they're learning to something real. As a homeschool mom of over seven years, I didn't just arrive at this philosophy through research — I've lived it.

I've been teaching and tutoring science and math for over four years, including hands-on science at Innovation Learning Lab this past year. My science classes are creative, tactile, and built around genuine curiosity — students build, observe, test, and explore rather than read and recite. In math, I bring the same energy: games, movement, real-world projects, and a focus on helping learners who don't think of themselves as "math people" discover that they actually are.

My background spans teaching certification, a Master's in Public Administration, and years of experience working with right-brain thinkers and hands-on learners — in classrooms, in tutoring, and at my own kitchen table.

Students are expected to dedicate approximately one hour per day on non-class days to readings, practice, and assignments. This is a meaningful academic program — consistent effort outside of class is essential to student success.

Yes — fully and intentionally. Compass is a BIPOC-centering, LGBTQIA+ inclusive, and masking-friendly program. Every learner is welcome here exactly as they are. Our curriculum, community agreements, and classroom culture all reflect this commitment.

Families will be asked to sign a contract that includes an inclusivity section — affirming that every student in the Compass community is treated with dignity, respect, and belonging. This is not optional, and it applies to students and parents alike.

Yes — Compass is a full academic year commitment. All families sign a contract at enrollment that includes two key sections: an inclusivity commitment and a full-year commitment. We ask that you come in knowing this is not a drop-in program. If concerns arise during the year, please reach out directly so we can find the best path forward together.

Students are not permitted to use any form of AI to complete assignments, homework, projects, or notes. This applies at home as well as in class, and parents are asked to uphold this expectation alongside their child.

Compass classes are tech-free unless a Guide specifically approves a tool for a given activity. Personal devices including phones, tablets, and laptops are not permitted during class time. Learners who require technology as part of a documented learning support plan are always welcome — please share this during intake so we can plan accordingly.

The Compass school year runs September 1, 2026 through May 18, 2027, meeting every Tuesday.

Students are expected to attend regularly. If your child misses a class, they are still responsible for completing any work assigned. Please reach out to the Guide directly with any attendance concerns.

Absolutely. Parents are welcome to use a quiet space on campus to work, rest, or connect while their learner is in class. Siblings are welcome to stay and play on our 10-acre campus under supervision. Drop-off is also available for Innovators who are ready to manage their time independently.
