4th and 5th Math

Math 4/5 · Compass · Innovation Learning Lab

What is Compass Math 4/5?

Math the way it was meant to be learned — through movement, games, projects, and real-world problem solving. This class covers 4th and 5th grade content, with most concepts overlapping across both levels.

Each unit builds on the last, connecting numbers to real situations and giving learners a chance to show what they know through projects and hands-on exploration. By the end of the year, students will have covered every major 4th and 5th grade math concept — and actually remember it.

Is this the right fit for my student?

This class is designed for 4th and 5th grade learners — or any student working at that level, regardless of age. 4th and 5th grade students work through the content together — most concepts at this level overlap significantly across both grades. You can see the full breakdown in the Scope & Sequence below.

This class is also a strong foundation for students who will move into Math 6/7 in a future year.

How we learn in this class

🎲

Game-Based Learning

Math concepts taught and practiced through structured games that build fluency and confidence — games are a primary teaching tool, not a reward.

🧠

Body and Brain Aligned

Movement is integrated into learning — because active bodies support active minds. Students are up and moving, not sitting quietly filling in worksheets.

🔨

Hands-On Projects

Every unit closes with a project that puts the math into action — connecting numbers to real situations students can see and touch.

📖

Open Note Assessments

Assessments are open note — rewarding genuine understanding and preparation over rote memorization.

How students are assessed

All assessments in this class are open note. Formats include a mix of the following:

Common Questions

Yes! Compass is open to any homeschool family. You do not need to be an existing Innovation Learning Lab family to enroll.

Both — in the same room, at the same time. Most concepts at this level overlap significantly between grades, so students work through the material together. You can see exactly what's covered in the Full Year Scope & Sequence above.

If your student is working at a 4th or 5th grade level in math — or approaching it — they are likely a great fit. If you're unsure, reach out at admin@innovationlearninglab.com and we'll help you figure out the right placement.

There is no traditional homework assigned each week. Students will have access to Khan Academy for optional practice. The one exception is the capstone project — students will begin working on it at home approximately two weeks before the end-of-year celebration.

Compass is a full-year commitment, and families sign a contract at enrollment. We ask that families come in understanding this is not a drop-in program. If concerns arise, please reach out to Deidre or Tamara directly so we can find the best path forward together.

Full-day COMPASS families (those enrolled in COMPASS classes for the full Tuesday) are asked to volunteer one full month of Tuesdays during the school year — approximately four to five shifts. Volunteer shifts run either 9:45 AM–12:15 PM or 12:15–2:30 PM and involve overseeing the main community room and managing student sign-in and sign-out. Families enrolled in a single add-on COMPASS class are not required to volunteer, but are always welcome to. Volunteer months are coordinated through FACTS before the school year begins.

Math 4/5 runs September 1, 2026 through May 18, 2027, meeting every Tuesday from 1:30–2:15 PM.
